Immigrants are not criminals

 SB 1070 – SB 1070 is the name for the new immigration law in Arizona that was recently signed into law by the republican governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer. It makes it a crime to be in Arizona without carrying papers that show you are a citizen or a legal immigrant. If a person is suspected of being illegally here, they can be checked for papers, and can then be put in jail for up to 20 days, be charged $100 fine, and possibly be deported. Police are only supposed to check for papers if a person is pulled over or questioned for something illegal. However, many say that this opens Arizona up to racial profiling because most of the people targeted will be Latino. Also, citizens can sue the police if they believe that the police are not arresting illegal immigrants. Some of questioned if this violates the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, which protects against “unreasonable searches.” Arizona is also making a law that does not allow ethnic studies classes, which would mean this class would be illegal because we discuss the history of Blacks and Latinos and discuss unity of the people!
